BRIEF: EVOVLE CARHARTT’S PET TRAINING TOOLS INTO A MORE FUNCTIONAL AND OWNABLE PROUDCT LINE BUILT FOR ACTIVE DOGS, WORKING ENVIRONMENTS, AND EVERYDAY OUTDOOR USE.
For this project, I led industrial design development for a new line of Carhartt pet training tools. The goal was to create products that felt rugged, useful, and true to the Carhartt brand without relying on the more blocky, geometric form language used in past programs.
Because these products are training tools, not toys, the design language had to feel intentional and purpose-built. I explored forms that were softer, more ergonomic, and more dynamic while still carrying Carhartt’s sense of durability, utility, and jobsite toughness. The result was a more evolved product direction that felt appropriate for active dogs and handlers while remaining clearly recognizable as Carhartt.
My role included concept development, 3D modeling, prototyping, product development, CMF exploration, and vendor coordination. Through close collaboration with internal teams and factory partners, I helped translate a heritage workwear brand into a pet category with a stronger point of view, clearer use case, and a more modern hardgoods expression that should appeal to a broader customer base.
What does it mean to train a pet? Here’s a broad overview of how I approached research.
Initial exploration sketches, exploring the themes of Pull, Feed, and Throw.
I focused on explored chamfers/edges without losing a sense of motion, as these forms would be hitting several surfaces/undergoing plenty of abuse.
